Wild Images of the North American Arctic Freeze

Making Fire on the Train Tracks

Before you start to feel horrified, know that the images of the Chicago train tracks on fire are not actually real. They have to manually heat the trains with fire because they don’t have automated electrical heating systems. Why do they act this way? The train tracks must be heated due to the low temperatures in order to keep them from freezing over and to ensure that the trains can still move.

Although it might seem risky, melting the snow and ice is the only way to avoid damaging the railroad. Since the tracks are made of steel, it stands to reason that they are not on fire.
